The ignition lock in the cylinder is responsible allowing the key to turn and start the vehicle. It operates via springs and chambers which may be damaged by environmental elements such as high or low temperatures.

If your ignition switch or key won't turn, it could indicate that the lock cylinder is broken and needs to be replaced. This is a job best left to an auto locksmith professional.

Remove the Steering Column Covers

Ignition lock-cylinders, or ignition lock-cylinders, are mechanical devices that allow a key inserted into the ignition switch to be turned to turn off the vehicle. They are prone to fail and wear out due to many reasons, for instance when the key is inserted too strongly or in the wrong position. They can also fail due to corrosion and other reasons. If your ignition cylinder isn't working and isn't turning, it's time to replace it. You can do it yourself however, it's a task that requires you to remove the covers for the steering column and the airbag cover. The process can be dangerous and difficult, and the replacement cylinder may require special tools to install.

The ignition cylinder can be located in the middle column where the steering wheel is attached. It has two screws at the bottom and an attachment clip on the side to hold it to the column. It's important to remove these screws before you begin working on the cylinder so it doesn't fall out and get lost.

Once the screws are removed, you can pull the plastic retainers off the lower part of the cover. A metal retainer clips into the top of the cover to hold it in place. It is possible to pull off the cover to remove the tabs that are lower.

You can cut them off by removing the retaining screw and bending the tab slightly outward. If the tab is broken completely it can be replaced with a piece perforated metal strapping that can be found in most hardware shops. You'll need U-clips to attach the new "tab" to the bottom. These can be purchased from any automotive parts shop.

Once the plastic tabs have been removed and the airbag cover is removed, you are able to access the ignition cylinder hole. You can unlock the ignition lock using the Allen wrench of 1/16-inch and pull the retaining bolt of the cylinder. Then, you can remove the cylinder. It is possible to replace it with an anti-theft cylinder.

Remove the Ignition Cylinder

Despite the fact that a lot of automobiles are now equipped with push-to-start, there are still certain cars that require an ignition lock. This cylindrical, mechanical part is housed inside the electrically powered part known as the ignition switch, which locks the ignition and "reads" anti-theft coding inside the car key to allow it to start.

If your vehicle is showing signs of a malfunctioning ignition lock cylinder, it may be time to call an auto locksmith to get help. A faulty ignition lock cylinder could cause numerous issues, such as a lack in power from the engine, and difficulty inserting or removing the keys. Worn keys can damage the wafer tumblers, which allow the ignition cylinder to rotate into a jam that prevents your vehicle from getting started.

Based on the model and the make, the ignition switch cover may be held on by clips or screws. With a screwdriver loosen the screw, and then slide the cover off to reveal the ignition lock cylinder. It is typically a steel cylinder that is about the size of a quarter.

To take the cylinder off, you'll need to remove the pin that holds it in place. Use a drill bit slightly larger than the slot that holds the key, and drill through it until the cylinder is broken. You'll then be able to take the cylinder off and replace it with a replacement.

The procedure for removing the ignition cylinder is different for each manufacturer, so you'll need to read the service manual to determine what steps you need to take. After you have the cylinder removed, you can put in your new ignition switch.

First, you'll need to replace the covers on the steering column. You'll also need to tighten two screws on top of the lock assembly to keep it in place. Once you've done that, installing your new ignition cylinder is likely to be relatively simple.

Take off the Ignition Switch

The ignition switch and the cylinder lock are two different parts of your car's electrical system. While they may seem similar, the two are able to be repaired or replaced separately from one other. The switch is the part that supplies power to the vehicle, while the cylinder is the mechanical tumbler that your key can slide into. You can tell if your ignition cylinder has failed due to its inability to turn the key.

When the cylinder is damaged, the tumbler's pins may wear out, making it difficult or impossible to insert or pull your key. If you notice your key is deteriorating and isn't turning anymore it is recommended to have the wafers in it replaced or smoothed out by an expert locksmith.

The ignition cylinder can be removed by removal of the bolt or screw depending on the model of your vehicle. Consult your vehicle's manual before you attempt this at home. It can be dangerous and result in damage to the steering column or the plastic covers. The switch is also linked with the wiring for airbags. If you mess with it, it could cause serious injury.

To remove the ignition coil, you will have to remove it using a drill. You can also use pliers to disengage the cylinder from the assembly however this is usually more difficult than using a screwdriver. After the ignition cylinder has been removed, you can purchase an alternative one at your local auto shop.

After installing the new ignition cylinder, you'll have to connect all of the wires to the electrical connection in the steering column and then test the function. It's usually easiest to disconnect the battery first, then take the key from the ignition and start the engine. It is possible to reconnect the battery after the ignition has worked. If it doesn't work then you'll need to reset the immobilizer system by a dealer or service technician. This can be a complicated procedure, and is better left to a certified professional.

Install the Ignition Cylinder

The ignition switch in your car sends an alert to the car's engine that it's time to start up. The key is inserted into the lock cylinder to start the process, but the wafers and pins inside the cylinder could wear out over time. This can make it difficult to turn on your car, or even impossible if the cylinder gets stuck.

If the key in your car won't turn, it's likely that the cylinder that controls ignition has worn out and requires replacement. Locksmiths can replace your ignition cylinder with a replacement so that your key will continue to function with your existing ignition switch.

To take out the old lock cylinder simply push it in to the release pin on the bottom of the assembly, and slide the cylinder out from its housing. If the cylinder isn't sliding out, try pushing on the release pin once more or using a screwdriver to press the small anti-rotation button under the cylinder's surface. You may also try pushing in on the cylinder using your key while turning it to the ACC or accessory position to try and force it out.

Once you've removed the old cylinder, replace it with the new one and turn on the vehicle to make sure whether it's working. If it is it's working, you can connect any trim pieces you took off to access the cylinder. Then, you can apply an anti-theft relearning procedure to connect your new keys to the vehicle.

The ignition cylinder lock may not be as important to the functionality of your vehicle as it used to be, but there are still situations that require you to replace it. It's important to consult a professional such as an automotive locksmith or car ignition switch dealership, to ensure that the job is completed correctly without any damage to the steering column's or other components in your vehicle. It's important to make sure that the new ignition is correctly coded to ensure that your car recognizes it as authentic keys. In most instances this, it will require a dealer or other professional to perform the relearn.
