The majority of children and teens who are taking adhd Sleep medication list medication report that they focus better, are less impulsive, feel calmer and more focused with their schoolwork. Some suffer a slight slowing in growth and could experience an increase in heart rate or blood pressure when taking these drugs.

The medications are available in a variety of forms including tablets, capsules liquid, patches and tablets (such as Daytrana). Adderall (methylphenidate) is the most well-known stimulant. It's available as immediate-release dextroamphetamine, sustained-release amphetamine, and dextroamphetamine with extended release.

coe-2023.pngStimulants are a class of drugs that are effective in treating ADHD. These medications help improve focus and attention by affecting certain neurotransmitters in the brain, including dopamine and norepinephrine. These chemicals regulate the prefrontal cortex, which is sometimes referred to by the term "secretary of the brain" because it assists in organizing and planning abilities.

Stimulants come in short- and long-acting doses. The short-acting drugs have a peak effect in 30 to 45 minutes, and must be taken two or three times per day. These include methylphenidates, like Ritalin and Concerta amphetamines such as Adderall and Dexedrine. Amphetamines can be more powerful and last longer than methylphenidates but both work in the same way to improve attention and focus. There are extended-release versions of certain stimulant drugs. These are a better choice because they last for 8 to 12 hours and are typically taken every day. Some of these medications are powders that you mix with liquids to create a beverage, while others are pills.

Finding the right medicine can take a bit of time. Your doctor will monitor your reaction to different kinds of medicines and adjust the dosage if necessary. The use of medications should be a part of an overall treatment plan that includes support and behavioral therapy.

Non-stimulant ADHD medication takes a bit longer to begin working however they can make you feel more in control and increase your concentration, impulsivity and focus. These medications don't alter dopamine or norepinephrine in the way that stimulants do, and therefore can be safer to use for longer periods of time. These medications can also be less prone to side effects such as constipation, heartburn, and decreased sexual drive. Strattera is the first of these medications that was approved by the FDA to treat ADHD. It's an inhibitor of the selective reuptake of norepinephrine. Your doctor could prescribe additional medications from this group which include the guanfacine (Intuniv) and Clonidine (Kapvay).

Non-stimulant antidepressants that are off-label are also available to treat ADHD. These are older drugs in the tricyclic antidepressant family, like Tofranil (imipramine). Doctors will only recommend these medications when stimulants and other non-stimulants aren't working or cause too many side effects.

Viloxazine and atomoxetine are prescribed by your physician. These medicines don't have immediate effects, but help reduce impulsivity and improve concentration over time. These drugs are part of a different class of drugs than the others and can trigger negative side effects, such as shaky hands or headache. Your doctor may also suggest a low dose of an antidepressant known as bupropion (Wellbutrin) that is not a FDA-approved treatment for ADHD but works well to increase concentration and reduce impulsivity. It may cause some uncomfortable but not always serious side effects, such as hearing loss or changes in vision.
